The woman was found bloodied and not breathing around 8:30 a.m. Monday on Hycliff Terrace after receiving an emergency call.
A man who was hovering over the woman had to be removed when investigators arrived, sources said.
Police, who have not released the names of the man or woman, are not releasing any information at this time.
Stamford property records show the home is owned by a couple in their 70's.
If found to be a homicide, it would be the city's second murder in 18 months. Former Stamford High School football player Antonio Robinson, 18, was shot and killed on May 31. No arrests have been made in that case.
